…pizza, Brooklyn, Irish songs, chilean roots and Swedish strawberries…

 

Many of the artists participating in Fittja Open 2011 are in the middle of their artistic process within the residency program Residence Botkyrka. Some of the artists have already completed their stay and are now presenting the work created during their time in Fittja.

 

Others are still in the midst of a long and perhaps challenging project and are at this moment sharing a part of their work process. Yet others, Kalle Hamm and Dzamil Kamanger to be more specific, have just been selected as resident artists. Therefore, you have the opportunity to get to know two new artists' practices.

 

A common ground for all artists in the exhibition has been a process oriented work method. Residence Botkyrka wants to support artists in their work over a long period of time, especially as artistic research is often not easily carried out in the course of a month or two. We encourage the artists to be open to the possibility that their initial artistic idea might change during the time spent in Fittja.

 

The relevancy of the artwork can also be tried out within the newly formed residency discussion group with local residents in Fittja, but also through discussions with the curators at Botkyrka konsthall, and sociologists at the Multicultural Centre. Other important discussion partners have been the local housing company Botkyrkabyggen, the Citizens' office in Fittja, the Department of city planning in Botkyrka, as well as local companies in Fittja.

 

What you will experience during Fittja Open 2011 is at times thought of as a basis for upcoming public art works. Could Sasha Huber's and Petri Saarikko's books about remedies become a wall for exchanging practical wisdom in Fittja? Are Ulrika Gunnarsdotter's strawberries on Fittja Äng here to stay? The ideas brought forth by the artists will be tried prior to future public art productions through "the one percent for art-rule" in Botkyrka that not only encompasses entrepreneur costs of new public buildings but also includes projects by the Department of streets and parks and the Department of water supply.

 

As part of Fittja Open 2011, artists with an interest in our shared public space and the mundane divinity of life have been invited to take part in an exhibition at Botkyrka konsthall, situated in Tumba in the southern part of Botkyrka. The exhibition opens on the 10th of September, one day before the 10-year anniversary of 9/11 in New York. At Botkyrka konsthall you will be able to experience Elisabeth Subrin's portrayal of her neighborhood in Brooklyn shortly after the incident, as well as eight years later. What has changed with the passing of time and politics?

Opening between 12 am-3 pm in Botkyrka konsthall, Tumba and 2 pm-6 pm at the Multicultural centre in Fittja. Between 12 am-4 pm Paula Urbano's work Her Life will be screened at the Tumba and Fittja libraries.
